If you steam a cake but the recipe say bake will the cake get tough?

Unfortunately not. It will get cooked and resemble nothing to the cake you might have planned. In a worst case scenario -if a steamer is with the holes, the cake will leak into the boiling water. Bake it -if you can. If you do not have an oven, you can use one of those mini-pizza ovens or even a microwave that has a grill function and bake on medium temperature. Steaming is good for vegetables and some fruits and if you want to avoid frying dumplings, but that is about it!If you steam a cake but the recipe say bake will the cake get tough?
People do steam cakes!!! Its done in Asian cultures. As an american citizen living in the U.S. I had never heard of it before either, but if you do a little research, you can definitely make steam cakes!! Report Abuse

No. It just takes a lot more time.

A cake is steamed, boiled like Christmas Pudding. You don't whack the batter into the steamer as it is, it is in the cake form, and usually also covered with cloth.
No it will not get tough. But it will not get anything really. There is too much moisture involved in steaming. You need dry heat.
Alright, it is compleatly possible to make a cake with a steamer and have it come out just like any other cake, the problem is it is quite tricky. so here is the plan.

First you have to put the batter in a cake pan that is slightly smaller then your steamer.(note instead of 2 layer cake you must make a 4 layer cake so the batter doesnt rise and lift the lid of the pan, so you only put 1/2 the amount of batter you would normally use) So that only a little steam will exit the pan at a time.

You must Also use a VERY LARGE water pan. that way you have pleanty of Steam that can escape but you can keep the cooking process going.

Next you must have two Pan Lids, one for the whole pot of water, that must have a steam hole. And a smaller tighter pan lid that doesnt have a vent for steam.

(note this way of cooking can work for any thing that needs a stove)

So you fill the water pot just enough so it will boil just under the steamer(note if the water touches the steamer there wont be any problems because it is fulling eclosed by the cake pan and lid, and wont get water inside)

Once you have everything put together, ad your ready to stark cooking turn the heat to high, remebr to leave the stem hole open and give it about 10 to 15 minutes longer then you would an oven (note this is water warming time, it would be like baking and not warming the oven it just changes the time slightly)

when its all said and done turn the heat off. dont touch anythinglet it all cool down for 10 minutes and when it all does you'll have a cake good as new.

have fun and enjoy
It will probably turn into a sort of sticky mass. I'm not sure if ';tough'; would be the word for it. I'm not sure if it would be pleasant.
